The GeekHouse
After talking to Si today, and Jonny the other day, it seems that I know several internet professionals who work at home. Working at home has its advantages, like the short commute, a space to power-nap and the peace and quiet. On the downside, working alone at home can get lonely, and chatting on the ‘net just ain’t the same. What you really need is people to bounce ideas off, to chat industry developments over with, generally socialise and be geeky with people who speak g33k. Colleagues, basically - but until your web seedling has found its roots, colleagues probably aren’t something you can afford.
So how about a shared space, with all the benefits of home-working (except a slightly longer commute) but with the social benefits of an office? That’s basically the idea behind co-working, a trend that has already started to appear across the globe.
Which set me thinking… could we start a co-working space in Birmingham? Maybe just base it in a large-ish house or apartment somewhere that’s easy to get to, just add a few extra desks and whiteboards. And wifi, obviously. The harder part is how to pay for it: maybe something like how CitizenSpace do it - allowing people to drop in for free, but charging for a permanent desk or your own key.
Anybody interested?

I think your dictionary is out of date - the definition of the word “geek” has changed quite considerably in recent years. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek
Call us what you will, this co-working space is likely to have a healthy quotient of technically-minded people, but also with quite an artistic flavour - at the blogger’s meetings, for instance, there seems to be quite a few photographers, musicians and other artists. Personally I think that could be a really cool place to work.

I agree, it would be a cool place to work. That word just makes me cringe.
